Before you begin your application, please read and follow the information and instructions carefully. This will prevent delays in the processing of your application. When you apply, your application is simultaneously filed with the University of Tennessee's Office of Graduate and International Admissions and the Physician Executive MBA program. However, you need not complete two separate applications. Our applicants follow a streamlined application process. The following is a brief explanation of these admission processes:
University Admission
The university's Office of Graduate and International Admissions (OGIA) will consider your application for general admission into the University. OGIA will notify you regarding the documents that they need to process your file. After your application documentation requirements have been met, the OGIA will review your file to determine whether your application meets the eligibility requirements set forth for the university as a whole. Typically, successful general admission into the university requires the following:
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent
- Medical Doctorate from a regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent
- Minimum grade-point average of 2.7 out of a possible 4.0 or a 3.0 during the senior year of undergraduate study. Previous graduate work must have a grade-point average of 3.0 on a 4-point scale or equivalent on all graduate work.
Nota Bene: If your grade point average (GPA) is lower than the OGIA minimum, do not lose heart! In many cases, the sum of the applicant's accomplishments, achievements, and continuing post-graduate education has provided the OGIA and our faculty with conclusive evidence that, despite a lower GPA, the applicant merits admission and acceptance. These cases are handled on a case-by-case basis.
Program Acceptance
Consideration for acceptance into the Physician Executive MBA program takes place after the Office of Graduate and International Admissions has determined that you are eligible for general admission into the university. The program's faculty committee will, using a holistic approach, review your entire application, not just your academic record's GPA, when making an acceptance decision. The faculty committee meets regularly so that you'll have an answer without an extensive wait.
Notebook Computer & Internet Connectivity Requirements
Successful completion of the program requires use of a notebook computer. You will be required to purchase a notebook computer selected and configured especially for your studies from the University Computer Store. You must also have a good connection to the Internet. A broadband connection in your home and/or office, such as those from your cable TV provider, a DSL connection from your local telephone company or Internet Service Provider (ISP), or a true broadband (two-way) satellite internet connection, is highly recommended. But, our systems are designed to perform well using a 56Kbps standard dial-up connection. The program will publish a notebook computer specification in August prior to the beginning of classes. The specification will be available on the web at our notebook spec page.
Academic Schedule
The program is conveniently scheduled so that you do not have to interupt your career or uproot your family to earn your degree. The one-year-long design means you may apply what you are learning quickly. To deliver your education efficiently you will attend four one-week on campus residency periods and online Cyberclasses on Saturday mornings (9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Eastern time). You'll complete assignments and class preparations each week too. To view the course timetable, please click here.
Program Fees and Payment Schedule
When you apply, an advance program fee of U.S. $1,000 is required and must be sent in with your application. Since this is an advance program fee payment, and not and application fee, we apply the payment toward your tuition upon matriculation. Please note, the advance program fee is refundable only if we deny your admission. For more details on fees and available financial resources, please click the fees and financial aid link.
Program fees cover tuition, meals, and breaks during residence periods; textbooks and course materials; special events; some software; transportation to and from classes or special events during a residence period; 25 hours of Continuing Medical Education (extracurricular); a personalized Leadership Development Plan; and various incidentals. You are responsible for transportation, lodging, the required notebook computer, and Internet connection charges.
Financial aid (up to the cost of attendance) and Veteran's Benefits are available to those that qualify. To learn more about the current tuition rate, available payment options and financial aid, please click here.
